Weekly Recap 2/12: No Immunity for Trump

The week started off with the good news that the federal appeals court ruled that Trump does not have total immunity and will have to face the music, as it were, in court.

But I’m going to take this post in a slightly different direction than usual to talk about the Special Counsel’s report about President Biden and the classified documents. The first thing to know is that the report found little to no evidence that Biden had willfully retained classified documents, and so the Special Counsel did not recommend charging Biden with any crimes.

However, as you no doubt know by now, the Republican Special Counsel littered the report with multiple references to Biden’s age and memory, which the right wingers seized on immediately, and the media–which clearly never learned the lessons from 2016–ran endlessly with that this weekend. Keep in mind that former prosecutors have all pointed out how inappropriate it was for the Special Counsel to drift away from the facts of the case into his own opinions and conjecture.

Here’s the thing. Yes, Biden is old. News flash–he’s been old this whole time. We all knew he was old in 2020 when he ran against two dozen of the Democratic party’s best and brightest (and let’s face it, are the future of our party.) But the voters chose him in 2020 and he has been one of the most productive and effective presidents of the modern era.

I mean, these are his accomplishments in just 3 years:

  • We’ve seen the most job growth under Biden than the last 6 presidents
  • The U.S. economy has recovered much faster than other advanced economies after the pandemic
  • We have major infrastructure projects in every state thanks to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act
  • He got the first gun safety bill passed in 30 years
  • Now insulin only costs $35 for people on Medicare
  • For the first time ever, Medicare is negotiating lower prescription drug prices thanks to the powers of the Inflation Reduction Act
  • The PACT act delivered more needed healthcare to U.S. veterans
  • Biden has boosted the U.S. semiconductor industry through the CHIPS Act, bringing more jobs to Americans
  • Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law, which will protect same sex and interracial marriages
  • Inflation continues to trend downwards
  • Consumer sentiment keeps rising
  • Thanks to investments Biden has made in manufacturing, companies have announced nearly $300 billion in projects in the U.S.
  • When Republicans blocked Biden from forgiving all student loan debt in the courts, Biden got his team working on carve-outs and to date has gotten billions of loan debt forgiven for over 3,700,000 Americans
  • After all-time low ratings in 2020, international public opinion of the U.S. has rebounded across the board under Biden
  • Biden has done more to combat climate change than any other president
  • He has taken executive action and signed legislation to develop clean energy at home, accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, and reduce pollution
  • He’s also protected more lands and waters in his first year than any President since John F. Kennedy.
  • Biden recognized our country’s failed approach to marijuana and is working to downgrade its Schedule I severity
  • He also pardoned all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession
  • He has gotten over 100 judges confirmed, and a historic number of them are Black, Hispanic, or Asian
  • Thanks to Biden’s leadership, NATO has been reinvigorated and is growing

President Biden has not only worked tirelessly to improve all of our lives, but he’s also assembled an incredible team of people around him who hold the same values that he does. I have been really impressed with what he’s done as president and am more than happy to do whatever I can to make sure he wins re-election in November.

Don’t let the naysayers get you down. Biden’s record is something we can all point to as to why Democrats should win another 4 years.

With that, here are some of the great cartoons I found last week:
