Weekly Recap 2/17: The GOP’s Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Week

Keeping track of political news like I do can be a mixed bag. But I have to tell you, I’m ending this week on a bit of a high. The following good news stories will tell you why. Enjoy.

Good News

Democrats flipped George Santos’ congressional district (NY-03) and overperformed by 8 points!

Democrats in Pennsylvania also held onto a state House seat in a special election to maintain majority control of that chamber. And they overperformed in that district by 25 points!

The former FBI informant whose testimony about Hunter Biden was at the heart of the Republicans’ effort to impeach President Biden was arrested and charged yesterday for lying about all of it. For more, read THIS.

Donald Trump was fined $364 million (plus interest!) and barred from serving as an officer for any business or legal entity in New York for 3 years for committing years of financial fraud in the state.

Republican cowardice has flipped the border issue to the Democrats’ advantage. Trump made it very clear he doesn’t want a border solution because he wants to campaign on border chaos, so Republicans in Congress killed the bipartisan immigration deal negotiated by the Senate. Now it’s the Democrats who can say we provided a solution to many of the problems at the border — I mean, even the Border Patrol was enthusiastically endorsing the bill — and it was the Republicans who voted not to do anything about it.

Joe Manchin has decided AGAINST running for president in a third party bid. He said he doesn’t want to be a “spoiler.”

Speaker Mike Johnson lost control of GOP factions and had to torpedo their own spy powers bill.

The White House just declined Speaker Johnson’s demand for a meeting about Ukraine aid & border security because Johnson’s position has “repeatedly shifted.”

The RNC is well behind the DNC on raising money, starting the year with just $8 million, compared to the DNC which had $21 million in the bank.

The days of extreme Republican gerrymanders in Wisconsin is over. The legislature passed the new district maps proposed by Gov. Tony Evers (D) this week.

Biden spoke out forcefully after Trump said he’d encourage Russia “to do whatever the hell they want in Europe” and that he wouldn’t come to NATO’s aid. Biden’s campaign also turned his words into this incredibly effective ad, which you can watch HERE.

Call to Action

Americans of Conscience just published their latest checklist of actions we can take to better our country. This week their list includes actions to assist families separated at the border, preventing AI in campaign ads, protect our communities from unsafe drinking water, encouraging young people to register to vote, and more. You can find the checklist HERE.

  1. It’s been sweet lately, hasn’t it?

  2. Perfect title. I have to say the America’s Parade brought tears to my eyes. We will never have change unless we vote for change! If you local and federal representative’s won’t vote for gun laws – vote them out!

  3. Thanks so much! I hope you have a great weekend!
