Weekly Recap 2/24: Republicans Come for IVF

Is it me or does Monday feel like a long time ago? I enjoy putting these recaps together but sometimes I feel like there’s been so much news, I don’t know where to start. Sorting through the wonderful editorial cartoons helps a lot (and is honestly my favorite way to recall the big news stories). That said, let’s get into the good news.

Good News

Longtime president of the NRA, Wayne LaPierre, was found liable of corruption by a jury.

We all learned this week that Biden had a major diplomatic win. It turns out the U.S. was incredibly influential in helping Brazil avoid a coup in October 2022 and instead having a peaceful transition of power when Trump-like Jair Bolsonaro lost his re-election. (Source: Foreign Policy)

The Alabama IVF decision, while horrible, is sending Republicans into a tizzy because they just realized how bad this issue is for them. An astounding 86% of Americans support IVF procedures. And the Democrats are doing a terrific job hammering the GOP for causing this.

Hungary finally gave the green light to admit Sweden into NATO.

The Republican party, especially at the state level, is at war with itself regarding mail-in voting. The MAGA faction is trying to destroy it while the old guard GOP recognizes their early voting machine was the key to two decades of wins at the ballot box.

The judge overseeing the $355 million civil fraud case has denied Donald Trump’s request to delay the judgment for a month.

The Democrats are pulling a rare move — A discharge petition to try to force a Ukraine aid bill to the House floor is underway, with plans for it to be available for signatures by March 1.

My Pillow owner and right-wing conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell will have to pay $5 million because of a contest he initiated, a federal judge confirmed Wednesday.

Biden’s fundraising is outpacing Trump. Biden’s re-election campaign ended January with nearly $56 million on hand, while Trump’s campaign had about $30 million.

Call to Action

You’ve no doubt heard by now that the Republicans’ attempt to impeach Joe Biden which was primarily relying on Alexander Smirnov’s allegations has been almost certainly dashed when Smirnov was indicted and arrested by the DOJ for falsifying nearly everything in that report a week ago.

But the question remained — When did Republicans find out that Smirnov’s disinformation were fed to him by Russian intelligence?

The New York Times reported last night that they knew all along! Senator Grassley (R) was the first to go to the press about Smirnov’s Form 1023 (about the allegations against Biden.) That was May 2023. The FBI told Grassley & other Republicans AT THAT TIME to be careful with the info as it was uncorroborated & credibility was a concern. They KNEW the info was problematic & still spread it out to the public to hurt Biden for 10 MONTHS.

We need to hold them accountable. Call your representatives in Congress (find their contact info HERE) and demand an investigation. A hat tip to the wonderful Jessica Craven for this lightly edited script:

I’m calling to see if the Senator/Representative has called for an investigation into Senator Grassley and Reps Comer and Jordan—they’ve been using Russian disinformation to pursue a bogus impeachment inquiry into President Biden and, in the process, serving as “Russia’s useful dupes.” The Smirnov news is a big deal—these lawmakers could be collaborating with the enemy. I expect my Senator/Representative to act with urgency. Thanks.
