Weekly Recap 12/23: Happy Holidays from Political Charge!

Having the Colorado Supreme Court determine that Trump is ineligible to be on the ballot due to violating the 14th Amendment insurrection clause is the gift I didn’t know I wanted this year. Yes, I’m aware that this decision is likely to end up in the Supreme Court, but I have to be honest that I have no idea what they might do with it. What exactly will they want to rule on? There are so many angles to this. So, for now, I’m relishing the decision and trying to correct as many misinformed MAGA crying in my social media comment sections.

With that, let’s get into the other good news from this week!

Good News

The Colorado Supreme Court declared former President Donald Trump ineligible for the White House and removed him from the state’s presidential primary ballot under the U.S. Constitution’s insurrection clause.

In a massive win, the Wisconsin Supreme Court struck down the state legislative maps and orders new maps in time for 2024 elections. Wisconsin is one of the most gerrymandered states–as one example, when Republicans won only 47% of the vote, they won 63% of the legislative seats.

This week the Senate confirmed the final dozen military promotions that Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) had been blocking for a year. Not only did Tuberville gain zero concessions from the Biden administration, but he managed to make Republicans the anti-military party in the process.

The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a judge’s ruling that rejected an effort by Mark Meadows to move his Georgia election interference case out of state court.

With nearly a month left in Obamacare open enrollment, more than 19 million people have signed up for coverage — breaking all previous records. Enrollment has grown by more than 7 million people since Biden took office.

The NRA’s most recent tax return reveals dramatic declines along almost every conceivable metric including revenue, assets, member dues, lobbying while their legal expenses have gone up. They also had their worst fundraising results in 15 years.

President Joe Biden pardoned thousands of people who were convicted of use and simple possession of marijuana on federal lands and in the District of Columbia.

Here’s an oldie (2020) but goodie from Mike Luckovich:

Every year, the cartoonist Marshall Ramsey creates a series of holiday-themed images that I find so beautiful. This is one of them from this year. He’s published the rest at his handle on Twitter.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
