Weekly Recap 12/17: Karma Finds Giuliani

Weekly Recap

This week started with the terrible news about Kate Cox in Texas being denied an abortion by the state’s Supreme Court against her own doctor’s medical recommendation. She had already fled the state by the time the decision came down.

This story only amplified the harrowing case of Brittany Watts, a Black woman in Ohio who is currently facing felony charges after having a miscarriage at home at 22 weeks.

These real life stories of women navigating the post-Roe era are fueling my fire as we stare down the incredibly crucial November 2024 election. I hope you all are with me in spirit and will join me in finding ways you can help turn out voters next fall.

I do have quite a bit of positive news stories this week, and I hope these will also help grow your motivation in the months ahead.

Good News

A federal jury hit Rudy Giuliani with $148M in damages for defaming Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss following the 2020 election.

The Biden administration announced it will subject dozens of pharmaceutical companies to inflation penalties — in a move that would reduce out-of-pocket costs for Medicare recipients.

Florida activists have gotten 1.4 million signatures to get an abortion access amendment onto the November 2024 ballot. A few hurdles remain, but this is terrific news.

The Dow hit an all time high this week, breaking above 37,000 for the first time.

Not known for making much sense, nevertheless Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) warned House Republicans that President Biden may not be impeachable for any conduct or crimes committed before he was elected president in 2020.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the final bill in the Reproductive Health Act, which gets rid of the ban on insurance coverage for abortions.

Gas at most gas stations around America is under $3.

Congress passed a bill (as a package deal with the defense authorization act) to prevent any president from unilaterally pulling out of NATO. This new law requires that the president get the approval of the Senate.

The U.S. Supreme Court left in place an Illinois ban on AR-15 semiautomatic weapons.

New York’s highest court ordered the state to draw new congressional districts ahead of the 2024 elections, giving Democrats a potential advantage in what is expected to be a battleground for control of the U.S. House.

In North Dakota’s legislative redistricting case, the 8th Circuit has rejected GOP state official’s request to pause ruling that calls for new map to replace one found to violate Voting Rights Act’s Section 2 by diluting Native American voters’ power.

You know how there are legislative seats all over the country that don’t get a challenger so the incumbent just gets back into office? Well, all 50 seats in the North Carolina Senate will have a Democrat running!

And finally, something I wish everyone knew:

Remember how absolutely every news outlet in 2022 and most of 2023 kept saying a recession was around the corner? That was because economists thought it was impossible to bring down pandemic-caused inflation without triggering a recession. Well this week the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) said that the “U.S. economy is on track to avoid a recession next year as inflation returns to normal.” Biden and his team just did something no one thought was possible.
