Weekly Recap 4/27: SCOTUS Scares

Weekly Recap

I’m not sure I can ever get over what happened at the Supreme Court this week.

On Wednesday they were discussing how close a woman needs to be to death before doctors can help them.

On Thursday they were discussing if we should allow the White House to be run as a dictatorship.

I honestly don’t recognize the Supreme Court and it’s impossible to shake the feeling that the conservative justices are just doing the bidding of the people who nurtured and guided their entire careers. Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson (and on occasion Barrett) were the sole voices of reason and it kills me that they are in such a minority position.

Clarence Thomas is 75 and Samuel Alito is 74. There’s a possibility our next president will have the opportunity to replace them. If Trump does, we’ll have lost this Supreme Court for the rest of our lives. If Biden replaces them, we’ll be a 5-4 liberal court again.

There are so many reasons to vote for Biden again. I’m incredibly impressed at how much he’s gotten done — not just in his first two years when we had control of the House and the barest majority in the Senate, but even after the Republicans flipped the House in 2022. He deserves to win re-election. But having him in the White House to potentially appoint two more liberal justices would be reason enough.

Good News

Pennsylvania had their presidential primary earlier in the week and their primaries are closed, meaning only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary. Well, over 150,000 people (16%) voted for Nikki Haley over Trump despite her leaving the race weeks ago.

Trump has lost his bid to get a 2nd trial in an attempt to overturn his $80M judgement from losing his defamation case to E. Jean Carroll.

Far right conspiracy theory website Gateway Pundit just filed for bankruptcy.

The real civil war is Republicans going after Republicans. This week, Senator Thom Tillis (R) went after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. “I think she’s uninformed. She is a total waste of time… She — not the Democrats — are the biggest risk to us getting back to a majority.”

As he celebrated the passage of aid to Ukraine in the Senate, Mitch McConnell put the blame squarely on Tucker Carlson as to why so many Republicans had become reluctant to help Ukraine.

Alabama is fixing the law so Biden can appear on the ballot in November, and it looks like Ohio will follow suit.

George Santos, who was running as an Independent, ended his campaign to get re-elected to Congress.

The RNC continues to be run poorly under Lara Trump. This week they took down the portion of their website that explained how to vote early.

The Supreme Court declined to take up Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake’s lawsuit claiming electronic ballot machines violate the law.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) is in her 3rd day of being roasted on the internet for her recounting in her new book that she killed he 14 month old birding dog. We all know she told the story to appeal to Trump, as she wants to be his VP and he hates dogs, but this might have sunk her across the board.

In a sign that RFK Jr. is pulling votes from Trump, Trump himself has started to blast him on his social media accounts.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to restore ‘net neutrality’ — those rules prevent Comcast, for example, from making Netflix steam more slowly so people choose to watch Xfinity instead.

18 people were indicted in Arizona over the “fake elector” scheme Trump’s allies pushed after the 2020 election. One of those is a lawyer who leads the RNC’s “election integrity” operation.

We now have 53 people who tried to keep former President Donald Trump in power after he lost the 2020 election who have now been criminally charged.

  1. Great post. Thank you for doing this work.

  2. The MTG cartoon made me laugh; the one right after that put a lump in my throat.
