Political Charge Weekly Recap 9/23

The news was dominated this week by the total chaos that has engulfed the House Republicans thanks to Kevin McCarthy’s weak leadership. Normally, I put this kind of disarray in the good news category, but a government shutdown will hurt hundreds of thousands of innocent people, so I can’t do that.

That said, there was plenty of actual good news this week!

Good News

A Taylor Swift Instagram post drove record-breaking web traffic to Vote.org this week and helped the site register more than 35,000 new voters!

Democrats kept control of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives after Lindsay Powell (D) won an open seat in a special election in the Pittsburgh area!

Hal Rafter (D) flipped a swing seat in a special election for the New Hampshire state House. The upset puts Democrats just one seat away from erasing the GOP’s majority in the chamber!

On National Voter Registration Day, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro announced that the state will implement automatic voter registration!

The Biden-Harris Administration launched the American Climate Corps which aims to give young people more access to the skills-based training necessary for good-paying careers in the clean energy and climate resilience economy.

Attorney Lin Wood surrendered his law license last week after disciplinary proceedings tied to his work for Donald Trump. Also, he’s turned on Trump and is a witness for Fani Willis’ RICO case in Georgia!

President Biden announced the creation of a new office for gun violence prevention, an escalation of the administration’s efforts to tackle the issue amid stalled progress in Congress.

After Trump announced he was planning to speak to the striking United Auto Workers members, the union president said, “Every fiber of our union is being poured into fighting the billionaire class and an economy that enriches people like Donald Trump at the expense of workers.”

Joe Biden’s re-election campaign is deploying California Gov. Gavin Newsom to the second Republican presidential debate next week.

A Republican candidate who lost last November’s election for county judge in Texas by more than 18,000 votes has finally given up on a lawsuit challenging the election.

Project Veritas, the far right organization best known for using paid actors and then deceptively editing videos to smear liberal candidates and organizations, suspended all operations this week.

Donald Trump lashed out at billionaire donor Charles Koch.

The $1.6 billion defamation case Dominion Voting Systems brought against Newsmax following the 2020 presidential election is set to go on trial in late September 2024.

Senator John Fetterman’s social media game was on fire this week, following Chuck Schumer’s decision to relax the Senate’s rule on attire. One example: “If those jagoffs in the House stop trying to shut our government down, and fully support Ukraine, then I will save democracy by wearing a suit on the Senate floor next week.”
