The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that a proposed state constitutional amendment that would protect abortion rights should be placed on November’s ballot. (Earlier, the Board of Canvassers had deadlocked on advancing the amendment.)


Relatedly, a judge struck down Michigan’s 1931 anti-abortion law, months after suspending it.


South Carolina senators rejected a ban on almost all abortions Thursday in a special session. All of the Democratic senators were joined by the 3 female Republican senators, plus 2 male Republicans.


A New Mexico judge disqualified Couy Griffin, a county commissioner who founded Cowboys for Trump, from serving in public office ever again because of his participation in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, citing the 14th Amendment.


Barack Obama and Michelle Obama returned to the White House at the invitation of President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for the formal unveiling of their official portraits.


Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker (R) will not endorse his party’s gubernatorial nominee, Rep. Geoff Diehl (R), who has been endorsed by Donald Trump.


Applications for U.S. unemployment insurance fell for a fourth straight week to the lowest since May, suggesting demand for workers remains healthy.
