Let’s jump right into it. This week there were three important stories about key Senate midterm races.
Wisconsin
First up, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) is making a lot of noise about NOT running for re-election next year. He had a lackluster fundraising total last quarter, which made pundits speculate as to whether or not he was serious about running and yesterday, he said this:
“You see what the media’s doing to me. I may not be the best candidate. I wouldn’t run if I don’t think I could win, if I don’t think I was the best person to be able to win.” Source
Wisconsin is the swingiest of swing states and either party can win this Senate seat. Not having Johnson run takes an incumbent out of the race, and gives the Democrats a hair of an advantage.
Iowa
Senator Chuck Grassley, who is 88, has not yet declared whether or not he is running for re-election. Yesterday, Abby Finkenauer (32) announced she would run for the seat, becoming the most well-known Democrat to declare her intentions. Source Finkenauer won an incredibly competitive House seat in the blue wave of the 2018 midterms but lost the seat in 2020.
New Hampshire
New Hampshire’s current governor, Chris Sununu (R), is signaling that he may run for the Senate in 2022. Senator Maggie Hassan (D) was already looking at one of the most competitive races of the midterms anyway, and the prospect of Sununu running makes it even more so.
The University of New Hampshire did a survey this week, asking potential voters about a possible matchup between Sununu and Hassan. They found a very tight race — 49% Sununu, 48% Hassan.

Tokyo, Johnson has been likely the worst Senator based on his zealous pro-Trump stance, which even his fellow Republican Senators would not go along with. Grassley has been a huge disappointment. In his position, he has occasionally been statesman-like, but he could have been the person who provided the needed gravitas to the floundering Republican party. Since McConnell failed in his job to be the leader we needed him to be, Grassley could have been the one to step up, but he too fell short. Keith
Johnson has been particularly loathesome these last couple of years.
