Why We Must Loudly Celebrate the Child Tax Credit Payments

Yesterday, the biggest government benefit since Social Security started hitting people’s bank accounts — the child tax credit payments.

And we should be singing from the rooftops.

If you missed the news, as part of the Biden Administration’s American Rescue Plan that was passed earlier this year (with NO Republican votes, I might add), eligible families will receive tax credits in their bank accounts monthly for a year. CBS News has a great article answering questions here: Child Tax Credit 2021: Payments to be disbursed starting July 15 — here’s when the money will land

But for the purposes of this post, I want to focus on the importance of making sure we all do our part to shout this from the rooftops. The Democrats’ ability to do well in the midterms next year is tied to how Americans as a whole approve (or disapprove) of the job Biden is doing. Big wins like this one don’t come often, and will be harder to come by as we near the election.

Celebrating this win — whether you yourself are seeing these benefits directly or you want to speak to the incredibly benefits these payments have on the kids in this country (see this report from the CBPP for great details) — is important to imprint on voters’ memories right now. If we do our job well, a year from now when people are asked, “Well, what good has President Biden done?” voters will have a swift answer.

So today, I encourage you to write a social media post (or send an email) linking to this post or another one that talks about the child tax credit in a positive way.
