Yesterday, there were some big elections in Maine, Texas, and Alabama. Here’s what we’ve learned so far.
Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions was hoping to win the primary in a bid to win back his old Senate seat, but he lost to Tommy Tuberville, a former football coach who had Trump’s backing. Tuberville faces Senator Doug Jones in November.
MJ Hegar won the Democratic runoff and will face Senator John Cornyn in November.
Sara Gideon won the Democratic primary and will face Senator Susan Collins in November. This is one of the most competitive Senate races this year.
Texas 10th District: Mike Siegal won the Democratic primary. This is a very competitive seat vs. the current Rep. Michael McCaul.
Texas 13th District: Dr. Ronny Jackson, former White House physician and Trump’s one-time nominee to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs before his nomination fell apart amidst concerns about toxic behavior and a over-prescribing of medications, won the GOP primary.
Texas 17th District: Pete Sessions lost his re-election (in the 32nd district) in the blue wave of the 2018 midterms. He ran in the GOP primary this year for the 17th district and won. The 17th district is considered a safe red seat, while his former seat in the 32nd district is very competitive. (How brave of him.)
Texas 24th District: Candace Valenzuela won the Democratic runoff for this open, competitive seat. If elected, she’d be the first Afro Latina in Congress.
