1 Question You Must Ask Yourself this New Year’s Day

lewis quote

New Year’s Day isn’t the only time of year we can chart a course for ourselves, but it’s as good a day as any to take a breather and take stock.

Every day in 2020 we will be confronted with hundreds of pressing issues that need to be fixed in our country. Trump will continue to be in power as we kick off the year and we’re stuck with a Republican-led Senate. The avalanche of bad news will not end. But, we can control what we focus on and where we leave our mark.

Today, I encourage you to think about the issues that matter the most to you, and values you hold most dear. Remember, we each only have a finite amount of energy and resources, and spreading ourselves too thin is a recipe for burnout. Consider spending the bulk of your political energy focusing on one, maybe two, issues.

Be inspired by the words of Rep. John Lewis, who knows a little about fighting for issues near and dear to his heart: “If you’re not hopeful and optimistic, then you just give up. You have to take the long hard look, and know that if you are consistent, you will succeed.”

So, as you take a moment today to think about the year full of promise in front of you, ask yourself:

Where do I want to focus my energy in 2020 so I can really make a difference?

If you’re willing to share your answer to this question, I’d love to hear it!

  1. Great message. Lewis is a hero. I’ve learned over the years how to relieve stress. It involves staying focused on the task at hand, avoiding distractions especially those intended to disrupt what you’re trying to accomplish, and taking regular breaks. Physical exercise also helps a lot.

My focus is centered on informing our blogging community about complex issues involving politics, sociology, and science. Knowledge is the key to awareness, and understanding is the key to effective action. The world today faces two existential and interrelated threats: 1) the rise of authoritarianism, and 2) catastrophic climate change. If we cannot successfully confront these, we will lose democracy and freedom, and then the very civilization so many of us take for granted. We must not fail.

    • You are so clear on your aims, Robert, that I have no doubt you will be successful. Thank you also for sharing what works for you regarding stress relief!
