Republicans Having Trouble With Ethics

What’s the problem with Republicans and ethics? A little seen article over the holiday weekend pointed to some issues with the upcoming vacancy of the Committee Chairperson for the Senate Ethics Committee. What’s the problem?

As prestigious as a committee chairmanship is, no Republican wants this position.

The chairmanship is coming open as Johnny Isakson, of Georgia, is retiring from the Senate at the end of December due to his health issues. (As for the saga about who will replace him in the Senate, read Republican infighting breaks out as Georgia governor appears to disagree with Trump over whom to pick for open Senate seat.)

Back to the Ethics Committee, the reporter for the article talked to a number of Senators, all of whom were pretty clear that there were not remotely interested in the job. They include Shelly Moore Capito, Roy Blunt, John Cornyn, James Inhofe, Richard Shelby, Chuck Grassley, Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, Mike Crapo, Jim Risch, and Pat Roberts.

So just as the president is being impeached for all kinds of ethical and legal reasons, and throughout it all the Republicans are complicit by staying quiet, now is the time they further identify as not having ANY interest in making sure their fellow Senators are being held to the highest ethical standards?

If you ask me, this story is a microcosm of everything that’s wrong with the Republican party right now. They plainly don’t even want to LOOK at potential ethical issues. They should be the standard-bearers for other Americans to look towards.

I do have a suggestion for Mitch McConnell, though, who is ultimately responsible for choosing who leads the committee. If no Republican will do it, why not break tradition and put a Democrat in charge?

  1. The very word ‘ethics’ seems to frighten most congressional republicans these days. 🤔 Gee, I wonder why? And as an aside, perhaps Mr. Trump needs to be reminded that it is not the president’s job, nor his right, to dictate to the governor who to pick to replace a retiring member of Congress. The executive and legislative are two separate branches. He seems not to understand very much about how the government works.

I know this suggestion was tongue in cheek but it’s too bad it won’t actually happen

  3. Ethics is not even a concern with them anymore. It certainly was when they impeached Clinton…at least that was how they sold it. Now? Gone. It’s going to take years for them to recover. It’s the Trump party…period.
