Impeachment is here, and it is the news of the day. New developments are tumbling out seemingly every hour. That said, impeachment is NOT the only thing the House is working on.
Yes, impeachment is the business of the day for the House Intelligence and Oversight Committees, but recall that there are 20 committees in the House. And they continue to work.
One great resource for what is happening week by week in Congress is Countable. You can keep up with them by going to their website or app, or what I do is get a weekly email that lets me know what’s happening.
For example, here are the votes the House is considering over the next two days:
The House has a similarly long list for Wednesday. The update I received also shows what the Senate is up to. Basically, they only have a handful of confirmation votes schedule, mostly for judges. Not a single piece of legislation is being voted on.
It’s laughable that the Republicans are trying to say that the Democrats aren’t doing anything while they focus on impeachment. First of all, impeaching a president is about the most important task they’ll undertake in their careers. Second of all, the Democrats are churning out helpful legislation to help all kinds of people across America and it is clearly Mitch McConnell and his complicit caucus that isn’t holding any votes in the Senate.
To sum up, the House is busy getting things passed. Countable is a great resource (but not by any means the only one) for keeping up with all the legislation they’re considering. If any of these bills are important to you, be sure to keep telling your Congressperson how you want them to vote on it.

In a future article perhaps you can answer a question for me. Seems that some bills require the House & Senate to both pass. Is that true of all bills? I’m wondering why House keeps putting out bills if they are only headed for a stop sign in the Senate. I’m hopeful that certain types can be implemented without coordination from the Senate?

Hi Sandi. Thanks for writing. Pretty much anything that the House passes must also be passed by the Senate, and signed by the president to take effect. The only type of bill that doesn’t fall into that category is a “simple resolution” as those are things like changing a House rule. As for why the House continues to pass bills even though McConnell isn’t doing anything, I can think of a couple of important reasons. 1) That’s their job and I don’t think voters want a do-nothing Congress, and 2) every bill the House passes shows the American people what can be gained if the Democrats are in power in the Senate and White House as well.
