It’s disheartening to hear the dangerous rhetoric coming out of the president’s mouth.
It’s disheartening to see so many of his supporters chanting terrible, anti-American slogans.
It’s disheartening to see that Trump’s approval went up with Republicans after the racist tweets.
So this article from Roll Call, When Trump attacks, the base turns out — for both parties, was a welcome relief. We know Trump’s fan love his rhetoric. They go to his rallies, they enjoy getting riled up, and they vote. But when Trump talks like that, those of us on the left side of the aisle get pretty worked up, too. His words feed OUR enthusiasm.
“In other words, Trump is a turnout machine for the Democrats, as well.”
I encourage you to read the article. It isn’t long, and you’ll likely feel much better for reading.
Enthusiasm is only part of the battle. It does us no good to have enthusiastic Democrats and Independent voters who then don’t vote. We have to put in the work. Each one of us who has any ability to help must do so. The elbow grease is critical.
Get involved with a voter registration drive or an organization that organizes voter registration activities. You can find a great list of those organizations HERE. Consider helping with one or more of the elections happening in 2019. Find a candidate you like and volunteer for their campaign or donate. Give money to the local Democratic organizations in those states or counties to help them drive local turnout.
Trump may give us daily reasons to want him and every Republican who supports his racist, anti-American rhetoric out of office, but we still have to do the work. And doing the work is a way for us to focus on positive action, critical in this dark time.
