A Ray of Hope in Voter Data

Chart Down

As explosive as the New York Times article about Trump’s taxes is, anyone who has been paying attention these last two years has wondered, will any of his voters care?

Over and over, we witness our president saying and doing things that were inconceivable even just a few years ago. Yet, his approval ratings have barely budged.

But, there is an interesting group of voters who seem to have shifted on the president of late. Who, you might ask?

The Obama-to-Trump voters.

The Obama-to-Trump voters represented 9% of the electorate in 2016. That’s nearly 1 in 10 voters. So, not insignificant. Well, pollsters have been tracking those voters over time and ask them if they have a favorable view of the president.

In 2016, 85% of that group held a favorable view. But now? 66%

85% –> 66%

That’s a fairly significant shift in a voter group that represents an important chunk of the electorate. (You can read more about this poll HERE.) At a time when I could use a little good news to indicate we might find a way to get out of the mess we’re in, I’ll take it.

And, I will continue to work to turn out voters for every election. Because no poll should ever dissuade us from doing everything we can to register voters and get them to the polls on Election Day.
