Yes, we want the White House, but without the Senate, we won’t be able to enact the big changes that our country needs. So, while you keep an eye on the presidential race, keep a lookout for the critical Senate races, too.

Right now, the Republicans have the Senate 53-47. We need to gain a net of 4 seats to overtake the Senate.

Here’s which states have a Senate race in 2020:

We need to hang on to all of our blue states (and Alabama will be tough for us), and flip at least 4 red states. Note that unlike 2018, the Republicans are the ones having to defend a lot of seats this cycle. But before you think that gives the Democrats an advantage, stop. Many of the GOP held Senate seats are in really, really red districts.

At this point, the most competitive races are likely to be:

Colorado
Georgia
Iowa
Maine
Michigan
New Hampshire
North Carolina

There are 4 Senators retiring:

Kansas – Pat Roberts (R)
New Mexico – Tom Udall (D)
Tennessee – Lamar Alexander (R)

Wyoming – Mike Enzi (R)

There is still a lot of time left for candidates to file to run for these seats, but a good place to check for candidates is over at Ballotpedia. Click on a state at the top of their 2020 Senate page to see who has officially filed to run in a race.

A few known Democratic candidates who are running to flip seats: Mark Kelly in Arizona, Mike Espy in Mississippi, Ben Ray Lujan in New Mexico, Jaime Harrison in South Carolina, and M.J. Hegar in Texas.

Pick a Senate race you want to focus on today. Think of it this way–if we take the White House, do we want our new president’s nominees for the Cabinet approved? We’ll need the Senate for that. If Ruth Bader Ginsburg decides to retire? We’ll need the Senate to be able to approve a fitting replacement. Want the president to sign off that new climate change or healthcare legislation? It’ll have to get through the Senate first.
