The House Opens a Corruption Probe into Trump

House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler

The Republicans took their two years of unified control to protect Trump from ever having to be accountable, for anything. That ended when the Democrats won back the House. (Thanks to all of you for making that happen!!!)

Now, the Democrats are doing their job of overseeing the federal government, and providing a check on Trump and his White House. Now, the Republicans and right-wing media are going to try to smear this effort any way they can. But let’s be clear — what the Democrats are doing is opening up a corruption probe into Trump.

This is completely separate from what Special Counsel Bob Mueller is doing. First of all, he’s specifically looking into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, including any links that he finds with the Trump campaign. Second of all, Mueller’s work is done outside of the public eye. The only things we’ve learned have been from legal filings.

Contrast that to what is happening in the House. Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler just requested documents and information from over 80 people connected to Trump. We know exactly who the Committee is targeting for information because they published the list.

Being transparent and presenting what they find to the American people is the most important aspect of what they are doing. This is what they say in their press release regarding the probe:

“We have sent these document requests in order to begin building the public record.  The Special Counsel’s office and the Southern District of New York are aware that we are taking these steps.  We will act quickly to gather this information, assess the evidence, and follow the facts where they lead with full transparency with the American people.  This is a critical time for our nation, and we have a responsibility to investigate these matters and hold hearings for the public to have all the facts.  That is exactly what we intend to do.”

They are looking into three areas: corruption, obstruction of justice, and abuse of power. I agree that it is long past time that these matters are looked into, followed up on, and presented to the American people.

A quick word on why I will be referring to this House investigation as a corruption probe. 1) I’ve started to see other media outlets call it such, 2) we need a way to distinguish it from the Russia investigation, and 3) Americans really, really don’t like corruption.

Every year, Chapman University conducts its survey of “American Fears.” And for the last several years, corruption has topped the list. Here’s the top 10 survey results from 2018:

Corruption is #1 and by a lot. This corruption probe starts now but will take some time. Time that we all can hammer into the American public how corrupt this president and his administration are. As we can see clearly from this survey, corruption is a big turnoff for American voters.

Every time the investigation turns up another corrupt act, like the doozies that Jane Mayer turned up in her New Yorker article about the intersection of Trump and Fox News, need to be aired out for the American people and slapped with a label of corruption.

I’m glad that we don’t have to just rely on Bob Mueller and his investigation. There is so much more that is going on. Here’s to the Democratic House!
