Mitch McConnell is famous for not giving an inch to the Democrats, so I’m confused why he gave us two messaging gifts this week, but he did.
So what did he say?
1) McConnell was talking to Reuters about their failure to repeal the Affordable Care Act, and called it “the one disappointment of this Congress from a Republican point of view.” He said, “If we had the votes to completely start over, we’d do it. But that depends on what happens in a couple weeks … We’re not satisfied with the way Obamacare is working.”
McConnell said that the Republicans want to try and repeal the Affordable Care Act again.
2) When the big Republican tax plan (the Tax Scam) was being pursued, economists everywhere warned that a big tax cut for the 1% and big corporations would NOT create the growth the GOP said it would and would instead blow up the deficit. Democrats warned that to bring down the deficit, the Republicans would then try to slash social programs. Well, now we have the proof that that is exactly what the Tax Scam did. When asked on Bloomberg TV to speak on the rising deficit, McConnell said, “It’s very disturbing. It’s driven by the 3 most popular entitlement programs: Medicare, Medicaid & Social Security.”
McConnell wants to come after America’s social safety net instead of reducing the tax benefits that the richest Americans and corporations enjoy.
At a time when a clear majority of Americans like the Affordable Care Act (and a supermajority like the provision that protects people with pre-existing conditions), and a minority of people approve of the tax plan, these are two issues that helping energize the Democrats.
Our candidates want to protect our healthcare and are hammering the message that Republicans only care about the wealthiest people and corporations in the country.
McConnell gave us two gifts. Let’s use them wisely to push more people to the polls to vote the Republicans out!
