Help Increase Voter Turnout Without Leaving Your Home

Are you one of those people who want to help increase voter turnout for the midterms, and while you know canvassing door-to-door is super effective, the idea scares you to death?

There is a way you can help without leaving your home. You may have heard about groups of committed citizens writing postcards to voters to encourage them to vote and writing about why they like a particular candidate. Well, the ACLU is jumping into this effort and are looking for volunteers to help.

As part of their Get Out the Vote initiative, ACLU’s postcard campaign will be focused on those Democratic voters who didn’t vote in the last midterm election. The postcards are an effort to “nudge” them to go to the polls this year.

The ACLU is making it very simple for us to help them. You can find their sign up page here. Once you enter your information, you’ll be given sample messages that you can use for your postcards. They have some tips and a short list of dos and don’ts to make your postcards as effective as possible.

They’ll send you some postcards and a way to return the filled out postcards to the ACLU. Then you’re done! The ACLU will address and add the postage to the postcards themselves. So simple!!

You can always fill out postcards on your own, but if you want to turn it into a neighborhood postcard writing party, that’s always an option! The more postcards get written, the more we can raise awareness among those Democratic voters who could use a reminder as to why these November midterms are so important!!

Thank you for considering this call-to-action.

P.S. For those of you looking for a quick recap of how Election Night went on Tuesday, here’s a good one. Also, following the results of the primaries, Sabato’s Crystal Ball changed several race ratings … towards the Democrats. You can find that list here.

  1. What a fabulous idea! Using your social networks to advertise that it’s primary or election day is also very smart, I think. And, if you’re in a state with draconian voter registration laws like NY, letting people know that a voter registration deadline is coming up.

  2. The link didn’t work for me.

    • I did just get a notification that the ACLU is temporarily out of postcards. They had an overwhelming response and need to fill the current requests and order more postcards. If the link to the ACLU wasn’t working for you at all, maybe try again. It just worked for me. You can sign up to get updates from them — probably the best way to learn when they have a new batch of postcards ready.
