South Dakota has its statewide primary election on Tuesday, June 5. Here you’ll find resources for voters, a quick overview of politics in the state, plus a few key races with the names and websites for Democratic candidates. Use this information to make your own voting plan and/or share with friends in the state!

South Dakota Politics Quick Facts
– No Senators are up for re-election in 2018
– The one at-large U.S. House Representative is up for re-election
– Voted +30 for Trump in 2016
– Current partisan breakdown of the state legislature:
Governor (R)
State Senate 27 (R) – 8 (D)
State House 58 (R) – 12 (D)

Key Races

GOVERNOR
The sitting governor is term-limited and is therefore unable to run for re-election.  The Democratic candidate is Billie Sutton. There are also two Republicans and an Independent running.

U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, AT-LARGE DISTRICT
The Republican primary has been deemed “one to watch” and is rated R+14. One of the issues at the heart of that campaign is how close (or not) the candidate is to Trump. The Democratic candidate is:

STATE SENATE
All 35 seats in the Senate are up for re-election this year. The Republicans currently have a super-majority. A list of the districts with re-elections and the candidates running for those seats can be found here.

STATE HOUSE
All 70 seats in the House are up for re-election this year. The Republicans built on their super-majority in the 2016 elections. A list of the candidates running for the House can be found here.

NOTE: If you’re unsure which state district you’re in, type in your address at Open States to get that info.
