California has its statewide primary election on Tuesday, June 5. Here you’ll find resources for voters, a quick overview of politics in the state, plus some of the key races. Use this information to make your own voting plan and/or share with friends in the state!

California Politics: A Snapshot
– 1 Senator is up for re-election in 2018
– All 53 House Representatives are up for re-election
– Voted +30 for Clinton in 2016

Key Races
It is important to note that California uses the top-two (or jungle) primary system. This means that the top two candidates who receive the most votes, regardless of party, move on to the general. With so many Democrats running in certain districts, it is conceivable that they split the vote so much that it sends two Republicans to the general. Read about that danger here.

STATE SENATE
20 of the 40 seats in the Senate are up for re-election this year. Republicans can break the Democratic supermajority if they gain 1 seat. A list of the districts with re-elections and the candidates running for those seats can be found here.
STATE ASSEMBLY
All 80 seats in the Assembly are up for re-election this year. The Republicans can break the Democratic supermajority if they gain two seats. A list of the candidates running for the Assembly can be found here.
